Accommodations
The accommodations rest within the temple grounds. Surrounding the space are 108 lingams, arranged as a walking path—each one resonating with a nakshatra, offering quiet moments for reflection, devotion, or simple presence as one moves through the grounds.
Throughout the ashram, 170 deities stand in silent witness, each carrying a distinct vibration and lineage. At the heart of the space are two central lingams—one larger, anchoring the grounds, and one smaller, held with equal reverence—together creating a balance of magnitude and intimacy.
This is not a place designed for spectacle, but for steady attunement. Those who stay here often find that the surroundings gently guide the rhythm of the day, inviting stillness, remembrance, and an unspoken sense of being held.
To support a comfortable stay, internet access is available, and laundry services may be arranged upon request. Simple meals are provided in alignment with ashram life, and guidance is offered for local transportation and directions as needed. Arunachalesvara Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva in the manifestation of fire, the magnificent Arunachaleswarar Temple, also known as the Annamalaiyar Temple, is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the five sacred temples representing the natural elements. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped as the Agni Lingam, with His consort Parvati venerated as Unnamalai Amman.
The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, celebrated in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical hymns, the Tevaram, composed by the saint-poets known as the Nayanars. The 9th-century Saiva poet Manikkavasagar also composed the Tiruvempaavai here.
Constructed in the Dravidian style during the Vijayanagar period (1336–1646) with grants from Sevappa Nayakkar and continued under his son Achyutappa, the temple complex spans approximately 10 hectares (25 acres) at the base of Tiruvannamalai Hill, making it the 8th largest Hindu temple in the world.
The temple features four intricately sculpted gopurams (gateway towers), numerous mandapams, shrines, and enclosures, each adorned with unique sculptures and pillars. Its 1000-pillared hall is particularly renowned. The 11-story eastern tower, standing 66 meters tall, is one of the tallest temple towers in India.
The Arunachaleswarar Temple is located 4.7 kilometers from Tiruvannamalai Tirumoolar Ashram, and on clear nights, the lighted gopurams are visible from the roof terrace of our guest house.
This sacred space is a living center of devotion, architecture, and spiritual heritage, inviting all who visit to witness the timeless presence of Lord Shiva as Arunachalesvara and to experience the grace of Unnamalai Amman.
Ramana Ashram
At the foot of Arunachala Hill lies Sri Ramana Ashram, a quiet sanctuary devoted to the life and teachings of Ramana Maharshi. Founded in the early 20th century, the ashram became a place of silence, self-inquiry, and spiritual guidance, where seekers from around the world gather to walk the inner path.
The ashram preserves the simple, contemplative lifestyle of Ramana Maharshi, offering spaces for meditation, reflection, and satsang. Devotees are invited to experience the peaceful presence of Arunachala and the timeless wisdom of the Maharshi, in an atmosphere of humility, devotion, and stillness.
Visitors often find that even a brief stay here offers a sense of clarity, inner steadiness, and connection to the sacred mountain, inspiring the heart toward self-inquiry and devotion.
Bheema Falls
Also called Beemanmadavu Waterfalls, these falls are nestled in the natural beauty of the Jawadhu Hills, an extension of the Eastern Ghats. Ideal for hikers, the falls are especially spectacular during the monsoon season, when the water roars in its full majesty.
Kavalur Observatory
On Saturdays after 7 PM, visitors are welcome to use the public telescope to explore the night sky and witness the wonders of the cosmos firsthand.
Komutteri Kolappan Lake
The largest lake in the hills, Komutteri Kolappan is perfect for quiet recreation—walking along its shores or boating on its waters. At the center lies a small man-made island, offering a serene natural retreat.
Sathanur Dam
Located near Tiruvannamalai, is a peaceful reservoir set against gentle hills and open skies. Surrounded by gardens and walking paths, it offers a quiet contrast to temple visits—a place to pause, breathe, and enjoy the wide sweep of water and landscape.
Many visitors come in the early morning or late afternoon to watch the changing light across the dam, stroll along the embankment, or rest in the nearby park. It is a gentle outing for those wishing to spend time in nature while staying close to the sacred atmosphere of Arunachala.
